Manila Boils Etc.

A taxi driver told me that he was from a well to do family in Dumaguete. He has been in Manila since 1974 and has not returned since. He was sent here by his father to study at the Far Eastern University. He spent his tuition on the usual roll call of vices. Got a girl pregnant. He actually blamed the girl for dragging his life into the mud of the taxi driver. God! Some people are so weak. He has not seen his father nor spoken to him. He is ashamed that his father had to sell seven cows for his education which he did not even partake.

People are asking if I am going to the Eraserheads reunion concert. I am not. I still cling to the memories of me watching them at the UP Diliman campus concerts. This time around? Nah. I’m too old. too fat. Too lazy. And I don’t want to partake in a marketing ploy brought to you by cancer on a stick. The Eraserheads’ songs are fun! I love them. BUT Yano‘s songs are substantial and socially relevant. I love them more.

Goodness. Manila days are boiling recently. I overheard from the radio that there are more protesters against the president in her State of the Nation Address than previous years. I don’t know about that. But what I do know for sure is that according to the President “Ramdam ang Kaunlaran” (Progress is felt!) and I know that is like me saying “I know the way to six-pack abs in two weeks.”

God. I am going to watch the State of the Nation address to drive my blood pressure to near-death heights. I wonder what vitriolic statements will burn my ears this year?

I am still sick. After I danced my dance at the CAS Week, I can hardly breathe. My lungs are congested with phlegm and my nose feels like it is made of cement. It must be allergic reaction to dust. I am heavily medicated and nothing is happening. A friend of mine said “Get enough sleep.” How can I sleep properly if I can hardly breathe? I wake up in the middle of the night to clear my throat and sinuses. It’s amazing I can still talk to my class. Although I have to take some pauses to catch my breath.

Agh. My head feels like it is detached thanks to the meds. And friends right now are inviting me to drink with them. They were shocked that I had to demure. I told them “If I collapse from the medication and intoxication, will anyone of you carry me to the hospital?” The invitations stopped.

Friend asked me, “What was the last thing you downloaded?”

Me, “The entire Miss Universe 2008 show.”

Friend: “What the? Why download that?”

Me: “Because I wasn’t able to catch it on TV.”

Friend sputters: “You….FAILED….to watch Miss Universe?!?!? You?!?!?!”

Me: “I know.”

Friend: “WHY?!”

Me: “I had classes. Plural.”

Friend: “I hope your students know that you love them so much for you to miss Miss Universe.”

Me: “Well, I didn’t miss much.”

Friend: “I still CANNOT believe you missed Miss Universe.”

Me: “Does this make me less gay?”

Friend: “Frankly, yes. Next thing you will be watching the Olympics!”

Me: “But i will!!!!”

Friend: “What?!?!?! Ewwww. Ewwww.”

Me: “there’s a gorgeous Indian boxer and watching synchronized swimming is good for the soul.”

Friend: “Still the Olympics is not that Gay.”

Me: “Kylie Minogue performed Dancing Queen in Sydney 2000 with dancing aquatic life with pectorals. That’s enough gayness for the next three Olympics.”
